The Una district administration has launched a plan to impart training to rural women in making handicrafts and utility items from bamboo. In a press release, Additional Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary today said a sum of Rs20 lakh had been allocated for the plan under lsquo;Samarth Unarsquo; scheme.
He said the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) had agreed to fund 90 per cent of the project, adding that the District Rural Development Agency had been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the activity. The ADC said in the first phase, women of Lamlehri and Boul villages would be trained by veteran artisans.
Chaudhary said there was abundant bamboo here. However, no other product had been zeroed in on, except traditional bamboo baskets. In many parts of the country, bamboo was being put to many uses, including manufacturing handicrafts and other utility items.
He said a memorandum of understanding had been signed between NABARD and the Rural Development Agency for bringing the plan to action. Those interested could visit the office of their respective Block Development Officers and enroll for the training, which would be given free of cost.
