Every farmland in Himachal to get irrigation facility: Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri today said that irrigation facility would be provided to every farmland in the state in a phased manner. He laid the foundation stone of two drinking water projects worth Rs 68 crore in the Manai area of the Shahpur Assembly segment0 in Kangra district.

Agnihotri, while addressing a public rally in the Lanj area of the Shahpur constituency, said that the work under the Jal Jivan Mission would be completed by next year. "Under the mission, Rs 1,027 crore is being spent in the district. Kangra is an important district where decisive efforts are being made to promote water and irrigation sectors. The work on the Phina Singh Medium Irrigation Project in Nurpur was pending since long. Till now, Rs 300 crore has been spent on it. Now, due to the efforts of the state government, the Central Government has given investment clearance to the project, the cost of which has escalated to Rs 643 crore," he added.

He said that the Sukhaahar project in Jawali was also incomplete. "A proposal will be sent to the Union Government for funding the project, which requires Rs 223 crore. The state committee has approved a medium size irrigation project in Jawalamukhi worth Rs 367 crore and has sent a proposal to the Union Government for funding. Around Rs 350 crore is being spent on a sewerage project in Palampur while Rs 120 crore is required under Asian Development Bank-funded drinking water projects," he added.

Agnihotri said that Rs 216 crore was being spent on irrigation and drinking water projects in the Shahpur constituency.

He added, "The government is making efforts to make Himachal a green state. It has decided to give a 50 per cent subsidy of up to Rs 50 lakh on the purchase of electric buses, electric taxis and electric auto-rickshaws to private operators. Six electric corridors have been declared in the state. While 15 e-buses have been started in Dharamsala, charging stations are being built at 126 places. Time has been allowed till December 31 for depositing the state vehicle tax without penalty and interest. It has been decided to issue 500 permits to the youth of the state to generate employment. The state government is working on a plan to hire e-vehicles from the youth for four years."

Earlier, MLA Kewal Singh Pathania said that effective steps were being taken for the development of Shahpur. Various schemes had been approved for providing better drinking water facilities in the Changar area of Shahpur.

Agnihotri instructed officials concerned to start a bus service to Delhi from Shahpur, expand bus service on various routes, install hand pumps and complete every drinking water project within six months.

Gopal Nag elected Mayor of Palampur MC, Raj Kumar his deputy

Gopal Nag and Raj Kumar of the Congress were today elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Palampur Municipal Corporation unanimously.

As per the notification of the state urban development department issued in 2021, the term of Mayor and Deputy Mayor the Palampur MC is fixed for two-and-a-half years which expired on October 13 last month. The elections for the Palampur MC were held in April 2021 and the Congress emerged victorious.

For the next tenure of two-and-a-half years, the Mayor is elected from the open quota while the Deputy Mayor is from the ST community.

He said Gopal Nag is an experienced Congress worker who has served as panchayat pradhan for two terms having clean image.

PWD clerk nabbed while taking Rs 500 bribe at Jawali

The Kangra district Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) yesterday caught Kailash Chand, a bill clerk in the office of the Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, at Jawali red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 500 from the department's retired employee Baljeet Singh.

The accused, who was arrested on the spot by the bureau team, had demanded Rs 500 from the complainant for releasing payment to him under the General Insurance Scheme (GIS). The complainant had approached the SP, the VACB, Dharamsala, who constituted a special team for laying a trap to arrest the accused red-handed.

SP VACB Balbir Singh said that a case under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 had been registered against the bill clerk. He was produced in the district Session Court on Thursday for bureau custody. He said further investigation is going on.

47 of 129 closed stone crushers allowed to resume operations

The Industries Department has allowed 47 of 129 stone crushers, which were closed following flashfloods in the Beas during the last monsoon, to resume operations.

As per the orders issued by the department, a multi-sector expert committee of the departments of environment, sciences, technology and climate change constituted to study the impact of illegal mining by stone crushers in the Beas river basin had recommended that 50 crushers should be allowed to start operations, as their permissions had been found to be in order. However, the Industries Department withheld permission to three of these 50 stone crushers to restart operations due to incomplete formalities.

Highly-placed sources told that the expert committee could visit only 50 of the 129 closed stone crushers. The Industries Department was mulling to form another committee to visit the remaining stone crushers. After the government banned mining in the Beas river basin, the Mining Department had ordered the closure of 129 stone crushers in the state, 82 alone in Kangra district, including 56 in Nurpur subdivision. The government has now allowed 19 of the 56 stone crushers closed in Nurpur to resume operations. All these crushers are operating in the Beas river basin along the Punjab border.

As many as 19 stone crushers were closed in Hamirpur district, eight in Una district and 20 in Mandi district, all of them functional in the basin of the Beas or its tributaries.

After the stone crushers shut operations, the prices of sand and gravel in Kangra district skyrocketed from about Rs 25-Rs 30 per cubic feet to Rs 70 per cubic feet. Government and private contractors in Kangra had been complaining about the rise in the prices of sand and gravel.

In Kangra district, the maximum damage was caused due to floods in the Beas. Thousands of people were evacuated with the help of the Indian Air Force and the NDRF. People lost their agriculture land, orchards and houses. The residents of Indora and Nurpur allege that their houses were flooded after the Beas changed its course due to illegal mining.

The issue of stone crusher owners indulging in illegal mining had been raised in the Himachal Assembly several times in the past. Former Dalhousie MLA Asha Kumari during the stint of the previous BJP government had expressed concern over politically-influential people owning most of the stone crushers and dictating mining policies in the state.

'Shame' campaign to return abandoned cattle to owners

There seems no end to stray cattle menace in the Kangra district. As per the estimates of the Department of Animal Husbandry, there are about 13,000 stray cows across the district. However, as per animal activists, the numbers of strays in the district is much more.

Tracing owner from tag

'Whenever I find a stray animal suffering on road, I trace its owner from the tag. I then call up the owner and ask him to take back the animal. I threaten to shame them on social media with the information. In most cases, the threat works and people take back their cows.'

Amid the government efforts to house these animals in cow shelters, an animal activist from Dharamsala has taken up a unique endeavour to tackle the problem. Animal activist Dheeraj Mahajan has taken up a campaign to return stray cows to their owners. Mahajan claims to have returned as many as 1,200 stray cows to their owners so far. He runs a "shame" campaign on social media that forces the owners to take back their cows from the roads and streets.

Mahajan said, "The government had tagged most of the cows in the state to trace them back to their owners. However, till date, the government authorities have not used the tags for the purpose. After I saw stray cows suffering on the streets, I started this campaign to return stray cattle to their owners."

So far, I have sent back around 1,200 stray cows to their owners," Mahajan claimed.

He said the government measures to tackle the problem of stray cattle are inadequate.

As around 50% of these animals have been abandoned by their owners for no valid reasons, returning them to their owners can solve half the problem, the animal activist said.

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Nipun Jindal said the government has brought up as many as 27 cow shelters (gosadans/goshalas) in the district for housing the stray cattle. Even though these gosadans have a capacity to house 3,334 cows, most of them are housing more than the said number.

The government had a provision of imposing fines on people abandoning their animals on the roads. When such a case was brought to the notice of the administration, a fine was imposed on the owner. The government was also providing a monthly financial assistance of Rs 700 to the gosadans for the maintenance of the stray cattle, he said.

Dharamsala film fest from Nov 4

The 12th edition of the Dharamsala International Film Festival (DIFF) will be organised at McLeodganj from November 4 to 7.

Deputy Commissioner of Kangra Nipun Jindal said that officials had been directed to publicise the film festival and ensure that maximum tourists and locals come and watch films in the festival.

This year's venue for the film festival is the Tibetan Children's Village, Upper Dharamsala, nestled in the thickly forested Deodhar slopes next to the popular Dal Lake of Dharamsala. Film screenings, masterclasses and discussions will take place in two auditoriums at the school campus as well as in two of Picture Time's revolutionary mobile digital cinemas.

The films to be showcased in the festival include Achal Mishra's third film Ri, which will have its World Premiere at the DIFF. Rapture (Rimdogittanga), directed by Dominic Sangma, which premiered at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival and won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Cultural Diversity, is also part of the line-up. Shahrukhkhan Chavada's Which Colour, which had its international premiere at the 52nd International Film Festival, Rotterdam, will be presented along with its cast and crew.

In the international drama section the South Asian premiere of The Buriti Flower (Crowratilde;) by Joatilde;o Salaviza and Reneacute;e Nader Messora, which received accolades at Cannes Un Certain Regard 2023, would be key highlight. Other highlights in this section include: CJ "Fiery" Obasi's allegorical tale Mami Wata, winner of the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Prize; Iranian-born director Sepideh Farsi's animation feature, The Siren, which opened the Panorama section at Berlin Film Festival; and Aki Kaurismauml;ki's enchanting Fallen Leaves, the winner of the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, would also feature in the drama section, the DIFF organisers said.

This year's edition will feature several internationally acclaimed documentary films, including the Asia Premiere of I am Sirat, a collaboration between Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta and Sirat Taneja; the India Premiere of award-winning Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi's Haunting Innocence; and renowned Chilean documentary filmmaker Patricio Guzman's My Imaginary Country.

Now, have ‘Virtual darshan’ at Chintpurni temple

The Chintpurni temple administration in Una district has launched 'Virtual Darshan" for devotees on VR sets.

Raghav Sharma, Deputy Commissioner and administrator of the Chintpurni temple, said, "Devotees can have 'Virtual Darshan' on the shrine premises. A VR facility has been provided at the temple to give real life experience of darshan to devotees on the payment of Rs 100 each. The facility has been provided for Navratras and the response of the devotees has been encouraging."

The Chintpurni temple administration was first to introduce 'paid darshan' in the state. The devotees could now make online booking by paying Rs 1,100 for privileged darshan at the temple.

The 'paid darshan' at the Chintpurni temple has been introduced in line with the practice being followed in famous temples in other parts of the country such as the Tirupati Balaji temple, Sharma said.

Helicopter services to be made available at Chamba, Palampur, Rakkar, Reckong-Peo: Himachal CM Sukhu

Helicopter services to Chamba, Palampur, Rakkar (Kangra) and Reckong Peo are set to begin shortly, said Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu here on Wednesday.

These heliports have been identified for helicopter sorties under UDAN Scheme. Helicopter sorties under UDAN Scheme will be made available at affordable airfare making air travel more accessible to the residents of remote and inaccessible areas besides the tourists giving boost to tourism activities.

The services will provide a more convenient and affordable mode of transportation for the people of the remote regions of the state. CM said it was the priority of the government to develop Himachal Pradesh as a famous tourist destination together with employment and self-employment opportunities to the local youth.

CM further added that the state government was committed to enhance tourism infrastructure, attract high end tourists and improve air connectivity in Himachal Pradesh. To achieve this, construction of heliport at district headquarters is in progress besides the expansion of Kangra airport enabling the operation of A-320 type of aircraft and help the government develop Kangra as the tourism capital of the state.

The Chief Minister said it was due to the relentless efforts of the state government that air connectivity between Amritsar and Kullu has become operational recently, which would go a long way in increasing the footfall of the tourists in the state besides revenue generation as Amritsar international airport serves as a major hub connecting various domestic and international destinations.

CM सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू का बड़ा ऐलान, 4 जगहों पर शुरू होंगी हेलीपोर्ट सेवाएं, किसे मिलेगा फायदा?

हिमाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू ने राज्य में हेली सेवाओं से जुड़ा बड़ा ऐलान किया है। सीएम ने बुधवार को ऐलान करते हुए बताया कि चम्बा, पालमपुर, रक्कड़ (कांगड़ा) और रिकांगपिओ हेलीपोर्ट के लिए किफायती हवाई किराए पर हेलीकॉप्टर सेवाएं जल्द ही शुरू होने वाली हैं। सीएम सुक्खू ने कहा कि यह हेलीपोर्ट उड़ान योजना के तहत चिह्नित किए गए हैं। इस दौरान सीएम ने बताया कि यहां के लिए उड़ानें शुरू होने से दूरदराज और दुर्गम क्षेत्रों के लोगों के लिए हवाई यात्रा सुलभ हो जाएगी और इससे इन क्षेत्रों में पर्यटन को भी बढ़ावा मिलेगा।

मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि ये नई हेलीकाप्टर सेवाएं पर्यटन और स्थानीय आबादी दोनों के लिए वरदान साबित होंगी। उन्होंने कहा कि हिमाचल को पर्यटन राज्य के रूप में विकसित करना सरकार की प्राथमिकता है। इससे स्थानीय युवाओं को रोजगार और स्वरोजगार के अवसर भी उपलब्ध हो सकेंगे। मुख्यमंत्री के अनुसार, सरकार प्रदेश में पर्यटन बुनियादी ढांचे को सुदृढ़ करने, पर्यटकों की संख्या बढ़ाने और हवाई सम्पर्क में और सुधार के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है। इस लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने के लिए जिला मुख्यालयों पर हेलीपोर्ट स्थापित करने की योजना है। उन्होंने कहा कि कांगड़ा हवाई अड्डे का वस्तिार भी प्रगति पर है।

सुखविंदर सिंह सुक्खू ने यह भी कहा कि राज्य सरकार के अथक प्रयासों से हवाई सम्पर्क सेवाओं का निरंतर विस्तार हो रहा है। हाल ही में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डा अमृतसर से कुल्लू के भुंतर तक हवाई उड़ानें शुरू की जा चुकी हैं। ये राज्य में पर्यटकों की आमद में बढ़ोतरी में मददगार साबित होगा क्योंकि अमृतसर हवाई अड्डा कई घरेलू और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय गंतव्यों को जोड़ने वाला एक प्रमुख केंद्र है। इस बारे में जानकारी देते हुए सीएम सुक्खू ने यह भी बताया कि राज्य के युवाओं को इससे रोजगार मिलेगा। इसके साथ ही राज्य में टूरिज्म के भी बढ़ने की संभावना है। पर्यटकों की संख्या बढ़ने के साथ ही राज्य के राजस्व में भी बढ़ोत्तरी होगी। 

प्रथम दर्शन सेवा: मां चिंतपूर्णी के आसानी से होंगे दर्शन, एचआरटीसी 21 अक्तूबर से शुरू करेगा सुविधा

हिमाचल पथ परिवहन निगम (एचआरटीसी) की प्रथम दर्शन सेवा से श्रद्धालु शक्तिपीठ श्री चिंतपूर्णी जी में सुगम दर्शन की सुविधा का लाभ उठा पाएंगे। श्रद्धालुओं को इसके लिए 220 रुपये अतिरिक्त खर्च करने होंगे। एचआरटीसी प्रबंधन इसके लिए जिला प्रशासन ऊना का सहयोग लेगा। एचआरटीसी धार्मिक पर्यटन सर्किट बस सेवा योजना के तहत 21 अक्तूबर से पहली प्रथम दर्शन सेवा शुरू करने जा रहा है। इस योजना के तहत श्रद्धालु 400 रुपये खर्च कर प्रदेश के विख्यात शक्तिपीठ श्री चिंतपूर्णी जी और श्री ज्वालामुखी जी के दर्शन कर पाएंगे।

श्री चिंतपूर्णी जी में सुगम दर्शन के लिए प्रति श्रद्धालु 220 रुपये अतिरिक्त चुकाने होंगे। निगम की 3 बाई 2 हिमधारा एसी बस सुबह 8 बजे धर्मशाला से रवाना होगी। 10:30 बजे बस श्री चिंतपूर्णी जी पहुंचेगी। श्रद्धालुओं को दर्शन करवाने के बाद दोपहर 12:30 बजे बस श्री चिंतपूर्णी जी से श्री ज्वालामुखी जी के लिए रवाना होगी। 2:00 बजे बस ज्वालामुखी जी पहुंचेगी। यहां दर्शन के बाद शाम 4:00 बजे बस धर्मशाला रवाना होगी और 5:30 बजे धर्मशाला पहुंचेगी।

अगर श्रद्धालु पूरी बस की बुकिंग करते हैं तो 10 फीसदी छूट भी दी जाएगी। रास्ते में खाने के लिए बसें एचआरटीसी के चिन्हित ढाबों या पर्यटन विकास निगम के रेस्टोरेंट्स पर रुकेगी। एचआरटीसी के प्रबंध निदेशक रोहन चंद ठाकुर ने बताया कि ''प्रथम दर्शन सेवा'' शुरू करने के लिए सभी तैयारियां पूरी कर ली गई हैं। श्रद्धालु एचआरटीसी की वेबसाइट पर ऑनलाइन और टिकट काउंटर पर बुकिंग कर सकते हैं। ''पहले आओ पहले पाओ'' की तर्ज पर सीटें उपलब्ध होंगी।

योजना से जुड़ेंगे बगलामुखी, चामुंडा, बैजनाथ

धार्मिक पर्यटन सर्किट बस सेवा योजना से प्रदेश के दूसरे धार्मिक स्थलों को भी जोड़ने की भी योजना है। बगलामुखी, चामुंडा, बैजनाथ और बाबा बालक नाथ मंदिर दियोटसिद्ध को भी ''प्रथम दर्शन सेवा'' से जोड़ने की योजना है।

CM dedicates Pragpur Sub-Tehsil in Kangra district

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today inaugurated office of Sub-Tehsil Pragpur in Kangra district through video conferencing from State Secretariat.

He congratulated the people of Pragpur area and said they will be facilitated in a big way after getting facility of Sub-Tehsil in which nine Patwar Circles have been included.

Governor visits Agriculture University Palampur: Expresses satisfaction over functioning of Zero Budget Organic Farming

Governor Acharya Devvrat today visited Agriculture University Palampur in district Kangra and during his continuous three hour visit on foot to different Centers of the University; he took stocks of various activities being run by the University and also gave direction to the concerned scientists to improve the quality. He interacted with the scientists and got important inputs about their research activities.

The Governor visited Zero Budget Organic Farm working under department of organic agriculture. He expressed satisfaction, the university was doing natural farming under his mission and demonstration farms of natural farming were fully prepared. He was happy to see that the yield of natural farming was much better than organic farming, which showed that natural farming was safe and ensure better results.

He directed Deputy Commissioner C.P.Verma to convene a meeting of University scientists with the officers of university and horticulture at district level so that they could work in close coordination for the betterment of the farmers.

He also visited seed production farm of the university and asked the concerned authorities to preserve traditional seeds of the area.

He also visited Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex working under Veterinary Collage at Holta. He interacted with the veterinary doctors. Head of TVCC Dr. Pankaj Sud briefed about the clinical examination of animals and treatment. He also explained about the new innovation for transfer of technology and said that more than 80 percent animals cured after treatment in the centre.

The Governor said that the process of artificial insemination adopted was not up to the mark and the experts should train them to minimize the spreading of infection from one animal to another. He added that it was important for saving the Indian breed cow.

He also visited Sperm Station of HP Livestock Development Board. Dr. Sandeep Jasyal  Additional Director briefed about the activities of the centre. The Governor directed them to rear Indian Bull as they were much better than the foreign breed so far as production was concerned.

Dr. Ashok Saryal Vice Chancellor, Agriculture University, Palampur, Head of the departments, scientists, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Gandhi and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.

CM inaugurates I&PH Rest House at Sidhbari in Dharamshala

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, at Sidhbari, near Dharamshala today inaugurated the newly constructed rest house of Irrigation & Public Health worth Rs. 1.25 crores.
On this occasion he said that the state witnessed unprecedented development during last four years, commencing accelerated socio economic growth of entire state.

Chief Minister said that the achievements in field of development of the state were also recognized at various forums on national level, by independent, non government agencies. He said, development was a continuous process and the present government not only accelerated the pace of development but also ensured quality in execution of these schemes.

He said planned construction was need of the hour and added that buildings constructed with safety designs prove safe for human life and property. He said government buildings should be constructed in such a way that they become model buildings for that particular area.

Developmental Schemes worth Rs. 17 Crores for Jawalamukhi

Development of far flung areas, priority of the government : C.M
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today dedicated and laid foundation stones of developmental projects worth Rs 17 crore in Kangra district ahead of the Vidhan Sabha Winter Session to be held at Dharamshala.
Addressing a public meeting at Majheen Chief Minister said that development of backward and far flung areas was the top most priority of the government. Connectivity and expansion of the road network, educational institutions and creation of health facilities was focus of his government so that they were at par in matter of facilities with any other urban area.
He said two new colleges had been opened in Changar area of Jawalamukhi constituency where enrollment of girls reflected that these institutions  had benefitted girls as they were getting higher educational facilities nearer to their homes.
He expressed happiness that the number of students had increased in Government College Khudian and said that science classes would be started in the college with the increase in number of students.
Chief Minister said that the local MLA of the area  Sanjay Rattan was like a committed warrior and was ensuring welfare of the area.  He said that all genuine demands of the MLA would be fulfilled to ensure development of the area.
He directed the concerned authorities to complete construction of work of college building with three shifts so that it could be completed within one-third time. He sanctioned construction of three kilometer road from Dabkad Chowki. He also announced Rs 15000 for the students presenting cultural programme on the occasion. He also released the school magazine on the occasion.
Sanjay Rattan MLA of Jawalamukhi speaking on the occasion said that the area had witnessed unprecedented development during the last four years. He said that three degree colleges were opened and 60 schools upgraded in Jawalamukhi constituency during the last four years.
He said that it was due to the benevolence of the Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh that Jawalamukhi constituency which had no college four year ago, today has three degree college, which speaks of the commitment of the State Government. He said that the area was completely neglected during the tenure of the previous government.
Chief Minister laid foundation stone of additional accommodations of Senior Secondary School Building Sihorbala and Government Senior School Nahlian to be constructed at a cost of Rs one crore each. He also inaugurated recently upgraded Veterinary Hospital Building at Majheen. He also inaugurated the newly opened Sub Tehsil at Majheen
Chief Minister laid foundation stone of Science Block of Senior Secondary School Majheen to be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.12 crore. He also laid foundation stone of building of Government Degree College Majheen to be constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
Virbhadra Singh inaugurated Lift Water Supply Scheme at Luthan Sudhangal constructed at a cost of Rs 1.62 crore. He laid foundation stone of Rs 3.60 crore Lift water Supply scheme Kamlota-Kohala and Rs 2.60 crore Baroli Irrigation scheme.
Vice Chairman Freedom Fighters Welfare Board Sushil Rattan, Chairman HP School Education Board Balbir Tegta, Chairman Kangra Central Cooperative Bank Jagdish Sapahiya, Chairman APMC Hamirpur Prem Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner C.P Verma, Superintendent Police Sanjay Gandhi were present on the occasion among others.

Mock drill in 7 quake-prone districts

A mega mock drill to meet any eventuality in the wake of calamity like earthquake and raise the level of preparedness was held simultaneously in the headquarters of seven districts today.
The mega exercise was conducted in Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba and Kangra falling in seismic zones IV and V to find out strength and gaps in preparedness and mitigation.
The State Disaster Management Authority, the Army, ITBP, NDRF, SSB, Police, Civil Defence, Home Guards, Fire Brigade, Deputy Commissioners, Red Cross and line departments, including Revenue, Irrigation and Public Health, Education, Irrigation and PWD, state power board and BSNL, participated in the mock drill.
Briefing media-persons about the mock drill, Chief Secretary VC Pharka said the basic objective of the exercise was to gauge the level of preparedness in the wake of earthquake of 8 degree magnitude.
The exercise was held with six vulnerable spots in each district headquarters and different types of situations were created to test the disaster management preparedness.
Additional Chief Secretary and head of the disaster management Tarun Sridhar said the mock drill was organised as the major area of the state was in the seismic zone and 25 per cent area fell under seismic zone V.
Some gaps in communication came to light and the efforts would be made to remove these after proper assessment and the Army had suggested strengthening of trauma centre and mortuary, first-aid training and wireless network at the ground level.
The Army also pointed out that there were gaps in coordination at grassroot level which needed to be bridged. Sridhar said the relief and rescue operations were conducted presuming 582 casualties and 1,731 injuries.
In Shimla, mock drill was conducted at six places as per the international parameters of disaster management through multi-agency coordination.

Casualties to be in lakhs: IIT

As per a survey conducted by IIT Roorkie, about 1.8 lakh people will die and 14.5 lakh be injured if an earthquake of 8 degree magnitude rocked the state. An earthquake of 8 degree which rocked Kangra in 1905 had claimed 20,000 lives in spite of the fact that the population was very less at that time. Geologists have observed that such calamities normally occur after about 100 years.

Kangra organizes anti-drug marathon

Kangra district administration organized a mass marathon against drugs which concluded in 10 km in this hill town. Deputy commissioner and all other officials at district headquarters also participated in the event with general public. Few days back, a campaign for eradication of cannabis was also started in the district.
Deputy commissioner Ritesh Chauhan said here that this campaign is not only against drugs but a bid to secure the future of the youths of Kangra district. "Drugs have spoiled many families and have ruined the futures of many, so this needs to be taken care of especially," he said.
Participation in the marathon witnessed maximum of youths from colleges and schools here. It was due to the holiday of Janamashtmi that people from various walks of life participated.
Kangra police had first started the drive against drugs on April 1, 2016 after which suppliers from Delhi, Meerut and Punjab have been arrested so far. Police officials have divulged that more than 100 people have been booked and about 80 have been arrested in the past few months.
SSP of Kangra Sanjeev Gandhi said, "We have found some chemist involved in supplying drugs from other states to Himachal. Police is also in search of manufacturers of such drugs, particularly the capsules."
