Garbage continued to pile up as workers of the Sahb Society engaged in door-to-door garbage collection in the city abstained from work for the fourth day today.
Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) Sanjay Chauhan blamed the state government for the impasse saying that the “House had sent a resolution to the government for giving its approval to the absorption of the workers in the MC a few months ago”.
Though the MC has pressed into service about 25 vehicles to collect garbage from dustbins in different parts of the city, trash and junk were spotted overflowing the bins in many wards and on the streets and roadsides, emitting the foul stench.
The Sahb Society workers today staged a protest at the Sabzi Mandi ground and raised slogans against the government and the SMC demanding their absorption in the corporation. They said they were key players in making the city clean and green.
Sanjay Chauhan said the MC had maintained garb collection in the city despite the strike. “It is the Urban Development Department which has to resolve the strike as the House has passed a resolution recommending the absorption of the workers in the corporation. But the government is sitting on the file,” he added.
