Palampur, December 18
A large number of villagers from Sehal and other panchayats took out a protest march in Baijnath against a private power company that had damaged their agricultural fields.
They staged a dharna outside the SDM office and demanded legal action against the company. They told the SDM that hundreds of acres of land in the Sehal panchayat and other adjoining panchayts had turned barren due to regular flow of water from the canal of the power company. "The entire agricultural land has become slushy and now it can not be cultivated. We are left with no alternative but to leave our land," a farmer said.
They also submitted a resolution to the SDM, demanding immediate stoppage of the flow of water till the canal is not repaired, compensation to affected farmers and registration of cases against the company for damaging the private property. They also threatened to act on their own if the administration failed to initiate action against the erring company.— OC
