Ten days after AICC general secretary Kamal Nath was relieved of the responsibility of Punjab after his appointment came in for criticism because of the taint of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Congress faces embarrassment over his replacement. AICC secretary and Himachal Pradesh MLA Asha Kumari, who was announced on Sunday as the party’s in-charge of the Assembly-poll bound state, was convicted in February this year in a land grab case and sentenced to one year. The Congress had tried to defend Nath arguing that no inquiry panel or commission had ever indicted him or mentioned his role in the 1984 killings.
