J&K: Civilian killed in Gujjars, Police clash over land encroachment

A civilian was killed and ten others including policemen injured as Gujjars resisted an attempt by the administration to evict them from state land encroached along the Sarore nullah near the industrial town of Bari Brahmana in Samba district on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway on Monday. Identifying the deceased as Mohammad Yaqoob of Vijaypur, sources said that he was reportedly shot by one of the two weapons, reportedly snatched by an irate mob of Gujjars from the police party who had been accompanying officials from the civil administration for getting state land vacated. Giving details, sources said that trouble erupted on Monday morning when a team of Himachal Police accompanied by their Jammu Kashmir counterparts visited the area along Sarore nullah, where Gujjars had raised pucca structures and also kullahs (thatched huts), to arrest some people wanted in connection with an alleged looting of cash from an ATM machine in Noorpur.
