Youth held for acid attack

A youth was arrested on Monday for throwing acid at a class XI girl of government senior secondary school in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district.

The medical examination of the victim was also conducted but doctors asked for three weeks to give their report.

The accused, Mukesh (20), told the police that he was in love with the girl but she always spurned him. On September 5, Mukesh proposed to the girl again but she refused and the enraged youth got an acid bottle from the school laboratory and threw it on her.

The girl told the police that Mukesh had been stalking her for the past 4-5 months. She said on September 5 he called her out and threw acid on her. A case was registered against him.

The first case of the acid attack was reported in Himachal Pradesh on July 13, 2004 when two youths had thrown acid on a woman in Shimla. The two accused were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.

Himachal Pradesh government had recently issued directives to sub-divisional magistrates to keep tab on sale and storage of acid in the state.
