Revenue down, debt up, says Bali

Dharamsala, January 4

The revenue collection from passenger and excise taxes has gone down by about 30 per cent in the state. "Reduction in tax collection and an increase in debt are worrying," said former minister and senior Congress leader GS Bali at a press conference in Dharamsala today.

Bali said GST collection in the state was the second best in the country and Punjab was the only state that had fared poorer than Himachal.

The former minister alleged that the tax collection in the state was going down due to poor governance and theft. The state government had failed to check tax theft by influential people.

Bali also flayed politics over the expansion of the Gaggal airport. He said it seemed that protests against the expansion were politically motivated. The government should not allow any kind of protest and should acquire land with immediate effect. "In the last two years, the government has not initiated any major development project. The number of unemployed youth in the state has touched 10 lakh. Employment can only be generated if major infrastructure projects are started," he said.— TNS
