Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri today led a protest march at the district headquarters against illegal mining and poitical victimisation of elected members of panchayati raj institutions owing allegiance to the Congress.
Led by Agnihotri, Congress workers marched from the municipal park to the mini-secretariat where they submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar.
Later, Agnihotri said that the SDM had suspended the up-pradhan of Haroli panchayat on directions from politicians. He added that the allegation levelled against the up-pradhan pertains to the period when he was not an elected public representative.
The Congress leader said the up-pradhan was also a government contractor and as per the allegations levelled against him, some irregularities were found in his work during the period when he was not an elected public representative. He added that action should be taken according to the rules applicable to a government contractor, and not as applicable to a public representative.
Agnihotri said that while the Congress would legally contest the issue, but cautioned that the BJP was setting a wrong precedent.
He said that mining of sand and gravel in the Swan river and its tributaries was continuing unabated.
