Oppn trying to foment unrest: CM
- Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said in Dehradun on Saturday that a marginalised Opposition was trying to foment unrest in the country over the amended citizenship act, but people would not let them succeed in their machinations.
- The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was not meant to strip minorities in India of their citizenship, as was being alleged by the Congress and other opposition parties.

Thakur was speaking at a press conference here as part of the BJP's programme to counter misinformation being spread on the issue by the opposition parties, including the Congress.

He said, "The CAA has a strong humanitarian justification as it seeks to grant citizenship to religious minorities from the three Muslim majority countries who had taken shelter in India". PTI
Later, addressing a public gathering, Kanwar said the Opposition, led by the Congress, was misleading the people of the country on the new Act, and vested interests had been indulging in violence and damaging public property. The minister said, "The CAA does not take away the Indian citizenship from any person, but instead its mandate is to give citizenship to members of persecuted minorities from three neighbouring countries, who seek refuge in India". He said in a democracy, everyone has the right to protest, but not to damage public property or create violence.
