Shimla, December 30
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has nothing to do with 130 crore Indians. As per the provisions of the CAA, minorities facing atrocities in the name of religion will be given shelter.
This was stated by Satyapal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India and former MP, who is also a member of the BJP national executive.
Addressing mediapersons, he said earlier, people coming to India were considered illegal migrants and were given citizenship after 11 years, but under the new provisions, they would be given citizenship in five years.
"When Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution give special rights to the minorities in the country, why should Hindus, Christians, Buddhists and Parsees, who did not come back during Partition, suffer?" he asked. The need for the CAA was felt as the population of minorities, which was 23 per cent during Partition, had reduced to just 3 per cent.
"The CAA has nothing to do with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is being done on the directions of the Supreme Court and National Population Register (NPR) is an exercise carried out every 10 years by the Census Department," he added.— TNS
