As the menace of paying guest accommodations is increasing in the densely populated residential areas across the city, the UT Estate Office has now constituted a committee with an aim to launch a crackdown on these illegal units. While the UT Estate Office is yet to take substantial action against such illegal establishments, the electricity poles, market boundary walls, public places are filled with such PG advertisements. With limited number of hostels in education institutes and ever-increasing rentals of residential apartments, PG accommodation has emerged as a preferred choice of students coming from different states — Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh — to pursue higher education in the city.
