THE HIGH-LEVEL probe ordered by the Himachal Pradesh government into the Bilaspur tunnel collapse last year, which left one tunnel worker dead and two others trapped (they were later rescued), has given a clean chit to the private company, Himalyan Construction Company, engaged in the excavation of the 1.2-km long traffic tunnel. The tunnel, which is part of the ambitious Rs 2,200 cr Swarghat-Nerchowk -Manali four-lane project of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had collapsed on on September 12 last year. Two tunnel workers - Satish Tomar and Mani Ram - were rescued after a nine-day operation carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities while third Hriday Ram was still missing and had apparently died.
