UNA, JANUARY 1

Taking stern action against policemen being drunk on duty, Una SP Devakar Sharma today sent the SHO of Police Station Gagret to the Police Lines. Action has also been initiated against a Head Constable, who was also reportedly drunk.

A complaint was registered in the Daily Dispatch Register (DDR) of the Gagret Police Station, stating that SHO Harnam Singh was missing from the police station for a very long time, his cell phone was switched off and he was not available at his living quarters.

As per information provided by the SP to media persons, he called SHO Harnam Singh at about 10.30 am today on the official telephone in connection with a case, but the latter could not communicate properly. The SP said the SHO appeared to be drunk and he immediately directed DSP Amb to inquire into matter.

Amb DSP Manoj Jamwal also called Harnam Singh, who again failed to communicate properly. The SP and DSP later reached Police Station Gagret where Harnam Singh was found missing. As per records at the Police station, the SHO, along with Head Constable Rajinder Kumar had gone to investigate a case, but cell phones of both officers were switched off and they were not available at their residences.

The SP said since the SHO was an important officer who has to implement law and order, his absence from duty and switching off his cell phone and not conveying his whereabouts to his police station staff was a very irresponsible behaviour.

Devakar Sharma said after a long wait, at 1.40 pm, he directed the Police Station Munshi and District Control Room to convey to the SHO regarding his repatriation to the Police lines with immediate effect.

DSP Headquarters Ashok Verma has been entrusted the responsibility of conducting a departmental inquiry, said the SP.
