Nurpur, January 3

Following a call given by the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Ltd (HPSEBL) Employees' Union will hold a protest at electrical divisions and circle offices across the state on January 8.

Kuldeep Kharwara, state president of the union, in a statement issued today said the union would strongly oppose the amendments in the Electricity Act-2003 proposed by the Government of India as these were anti-employee and anti-consumers.

He said after the proposed amendments, the HPSEBL would split into work and distribution wings and small private companies would undertake financial managements of the wings. "It will not only burden the electricity consumers but also put the employees in trouble," he said. The board employees had worked hard in the electrification of remote and hilly villages in the state and at that time, no private companies were invited but now, the Government of India was all set to handover the well-created infrastructure of the HPSEBL to private players which would be opposed tooth and nail by the board employees, he added. Kharwara appealed to Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur not to support and enforce the proposed amendments in the Electricity Act-2003 keeping in view the larger interest of the hill state. He said the Punjab Government had already renounced the amendments.
