Despite repeated requests by residents, the Kangra administration has failed to fix time for functioning of stone crushers in the Jaisinghpur area. At present, all stone crushers are functioning round the clock which has also become a health hazard.
During a visit to the area, the residents said they had approached the higher-ups, including local MLA Ravinder Dhiman, but none of them came to their rescue. It has become difficult for children to study and the aged to sleep at night because of the widespread air and noise pollution in the area.
There has been no let-up in illegal mining in the Jaisinghpur area. Since the water level of the Beas has gone low these days, the mining activities have escalated and heavy machinery has been pressed into service in the middle of the river to extract stones and boulders. In the present scenario, every river and rivulet in the area is prone to illegal mining as dozen of tippers and tractors are allegedly engaged in the job. As a result, a number of natural water resources have dried up and the water level in the rivulets has also gone down.
The state agencies, particularly the police, forest, revenue and mining departments, have failed to follow the directions of the NGT to shift or shut the stone crushers installed within 100-metre radius of the Beas.
Jaisinghpur MLA Ravinder Ravi Dhiman said he had received various complaints from local residents in this regard.
ldquo; Most of the stone crushers function for 24 hours making the lives of locals miserable, rdquo; he added.
He said he had already asked the administration to fix the working hours of stone crushers and that no crushers be allowed to function after 5 pm.
