Chamba, January 2

In the past five years, four murder, 23 abetment to suicide and 35 cruelty to women cases have been registered in Chamba district. All such heinous crimes of violence against women begin as small incidents of habitual torture at home.

Therefore, in an endeavour to reduce repeated domestic violence incidents, a standard operating procedure (SOP) was created and implemented in Chamba district in May last year.

For this, the central database of domestic violence complaints was prepared at the district headquarters which was being updated monthly, Chamba Superintendent of Police Monika Bhutunguru said here today.

Irrespective of whatever action is taken on the domestic violence complaint, a mechanism for regular monitoring and supervision to prevent repeated incidences of domestic violence had been established, the SP said.

"Every 15th day, the complainant is either contacted on her mobile number or is individually assigned a lady constable who visits her house. A report is prepared after speaking to her," the officer said, adding that a WhatsApp group had also been created for easier supervision.

The SP said, "If the police report shows persistence of domestic violence, further action is taken by the respective SHO. In case the complainant is domestic violence-free for six consecutive months, her name is deleted from the list."

Last year, a total of 461 complainants had been monitored in this manner in the district and 91 names had been deleted from the list so far.
