Over 4.7 lakh to exercise right to vote

As many as 4,70,857 voters would exercise their franchise for electing 3,090 Panchayati Raj representatives in Shimla district which includes 363 pradhans and up-pradhans each, 2,159 gram panchayat members, 181 panchayat samiti members and 24 zila parishad members.
In a statement issues here, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Malhotra said 845 posts would be reserved for women in the general category, 411 for Scheduled Castes (SC) women, eight for Scheduled Tribes (ST) women while 214 posts would be reserved for Scheduled Castes members for 2159 gram panchayat members.
He said out of the 363 pradhans, 123 are reserved for women of general category, 56 for SC women, four for Other Backward Classes (OBC) women and 50 for SCs and two for OBCs.
For the elections of 181 panchayat samiti members, 64 are reserved for general category women, 28 for SC women, two for OBC women and 24 for SCs while eight posts are reserved for general category women, four for SC women and three for SCs out of the total 24 zila parishad members.
The voting would be held at 1,174 polling booths in which 806 polling parties comprising 3,890 polling staff and assistant returning officers would be deployed, he added.
