Shimla to install "electronic-toilets"

After getting recognition in France for being one among the three cities of the world taking collective steps on climate change, "Queen of Hills" Shimla is now gearing up to install "electronic-toilets" to save water and provide proper sanitation to visitors and citizens.

Shimla mayor Sanjay Chauhan said that these toilets required little water compared to the traditional ones and were equipped with latest technology. So even if someone does not flush the toilet, it will flush automatically. The toilets are portable, hygienically maintained, and eco-friendly with mechanism of payment by inserting a coin, an automatic door and a washing mechanism.

"The total expenditure to install each toilet will be around Rs 5.5 lakh, which we will bear. The installation of e-toilets would begin from the opposite of Town Hall building at Mall and later will be extended to other important parts of city, including the most crowded areas and the areas where it is difficult to construct toilets," said Chauhan.

He said that they had invited tenders on August 1 for the Shimla Municipal Corporation's previous project for constructing around 125 new toilets in the city. Shimla Municipal Corporation had prepared an estimate of Rs 2 crores for these 125 toilets for which we were going to take help of corporate houses, cement companies and other agencies as part of their corporate social responsibility activites.

"Besides these projects, we are making efforts to convert all 108 toilets of the city into smart toilets which look and work better than the normal ones. We have already constructed two smart toilets at Lift and Tarahall," he added.
