Mandi, January 3
Winter sports will be give a miss during the carnival in Manali due to dry weather. This has disappointed tourists as well as those associated with the tourism industry.
The state government had fixed the dates for the winter carnival in Manali from January 2 to 6, while the execution of winter sports depended on the weather conditions and availability of snow in the area.
The focus is on mixed programmes involving cultural and western activities. Earlier, the dates of the carnival were fixed only after heavy snowfall which was a must for winter sports. Then, it was suggested that the carnival should have fixed dates, which could help in the promotion of the event. This year, January 2 was fixed as the starting date because hoteliers believed the tourists who came to celebrate New Year would extend their stay to see the carnival, which did not happen.
Anup Thakur, president of the Hoteliers Association, Kullu-Manali, said the state government and the organising committee were doing their best for the promotion of tourism in Kullu and Manali, but there was a need to conduct winter games to attract more tourists. Subdivisional Magistrate, Manali, and vice-chairperson of the organising committee, Raman Gharsanghi said, "Due to dry weather, we are unable to conduct winter sports along with the carnival. We will conduct them later depending on weather conditions and availability of snow in the ski slopes of the Solang valley." —TNS
