Dharamsala, January 3
Senior BJP leader and Power Minister in the Uttar Pradesh Government Srikant Sharma addressed a press conference here today and alleged the Congress was vitiating the social milieu in the country over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
He said Mahatama Gandhi had advocated giving citizenship of India to religious minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The Congress itself had been talking to bring in such an Act. Now that the BJP had brought the CAA displaying its political will, the Congress was spreading misinformation regarding it to create divisions in society, he said.
Srikant Sharma said the CAA just talks of giving Indian citizenship to prosecuted minorities of neighbouring countries. The religious minorities, including Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists, were being forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan. "I do not know why the Congress is against giving Indian citizenship to the prosecuted religious minorities of neighbouring countries," he said.
When asked about the National Population Register (NPR) being implemented in the country, Srikant Sharma said it was always prepared by the Government of India to provide facilities to poorest of the poor in the country. Now when the BJP was talking of implementing it, the Opposition was projecting it before the people as if it would be used to annul the citizenship of Muslims. He said the BJP government at the Centre would not succumb to the pressure of the Congress.
