BJP protests near Rahul's residence accusing Himachal CM of corruption

The BJP youth wing protested outside Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's residence in New Delhi on Tuesday against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. BJP youth wing president and Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) MP Anurag Singh Thakur led the protesters.

Thakur and other BJP workers protested a day after BJP leader Arun Jaitley wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging monetary benefits were given to Virbhadra Singh for favouring a power company.

"Even in this cold, batons and water cannons were used against us. But we won't relent," said Thakur on the protests.

Jaitley on Monday took a dig at Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi saying that they should come clear on their stand on corruption. Jaitley said that on Sunday he had written a letter to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accusing Virbhadra Singh of being involved in corruption.

"Virbhadra Singh is involved in corruption. It's a test case for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, whether their anger against corruption is real or contrived," Jaitley said.

He accused Virbhadra Singh of taking bribe from a company called Venture Eng and Tech Pvt Ltd. "Venture Eng and Tech Pvt Ltd was sanctioned a hydro power project in 2002. However, the company defaulted and the sanction was withdrawn in 2004. But after Virbhadra assumed office again, he gave 10 months extension to the company through a cabinet decision," he alleged.

"Owner V Chandrashekhar make a payment of Rs 1.5 crore and 2.4 crore to Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh. The same kitty is used by Singh, his wife and children, and Officials on Special Duty (OSD) to him for getting shares allocated in another venture," he said.

Former Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Virbhadra Singh had to resign from Union Cabinet over the corruption charges against him and his wife.

He is accused of misusing his office when he was the Himachal Pradesh chief minister in 1989 and granting favours to industrialists. He allegedly granted favours to industrialists and his conversation was recorded in an audio CD.
