CPM, BJP plan protests against fare hike
To protest against the decision of the Himachal Pradesh government to hike in bus fare by 30%, the CPM has decided to launch a statewide agitation from October 1, the day the hike comes into force. On October 7, the party will block roads across the state under 'rasta roko' call.
The Himachal Pradesh state secretariat of the CPM, while condemning the decision of the Congress government to hike the fare in both HRTC and private buses, said protest demonstrations would be held throughout the state on the day the hike is implemented.
"The party has called upon all its units to gather at the district headquarters on October 1. It will organize protest demonstrations against the anti-people decision of the state government. In case the government is doesn't withdraw the hike, there will be a 'rasta roko' call on October 7 that will bring the life to standstill in the state," said CPM state secretariat member Tikender Singh Panwar.
The CPM has called upon the people to solidly stand on the demands and support the party so that the government is forced to withdraw its decision. It also alleged that the government has acted at the behest of private bus operators, who wanted to raise the fare for a long time.
The government cannot justify charging Rs 5 for a distance of one km. It is unacceptable," Panwar said. The CPM has asked the government to revert back to the old price of Rs 2 for a short distance instead of Rs 5.
Decision to hike the bus fare has also left the BJP fuming, which has termed it as anti people. BJP state president Satpal Satti said those travelling in public transport would be hit hard by the decision. Demanding a roll back on the decision, the BJP, too, has threatened to launch an agitation on the issue in the coming days.
